What is a PLC?

A PLC is a programmable device specifically designed for automation and process control. Examples include opening and closing a valve, controlling temperatures, or regulating flow and pressure. Unlike a standard PC, a PLC has a number of input and output terminals, also known as terminals.

The predecessor to the PLC was mechanical relays and their control systems. The old way of designing control systems required a lot of wiring and was both time-consuming and complicated to modify. That is why a PLC instead consists of small digital relays or transistors that are programmed using software, so that it is no longer necessary to make changes to physical connections. A PLC is also significantly smaller in size, and it is easier to make changes to than mechanical relays.

PLCs come in many different sizes, ranging from small PLCs that take up as little space as a deck of playing cards to large PLCs that are mounted in racks and are about four times larger. However, the physical design has no bearing on the PLC’s processing power.

Flexibility and efficiency for all sectors

Siemens control systems are both well-known and highly regarded, offering a high level of efficiency and flexibility. The Siemens product range is designed to meet every need across all industrial sectors.

It is important to Gibotech to meet our customers’ needs, which is why we include Siemens products in our selection of control systems.

Why should you choose a solution from Gibotech?

Precision

CNC machines ensure high precision, high quality, and repeatability in every detail.

Productivity

Implementing automation through robots leads to greater efficiency, a better work environment, and often lower operating costs.

Improved working conditions

Automating repetitive tasks improves ergonomics and enhances employee well-being.

PLC programming

Automation and robotics solutions include a central control system—a PLC—into which safety functions (safety PLC), including emergency stop, are integrated.

Only very small robotic systems can be controlled using the robot’s own controller as a substitute for a PLC. Siemens manufactures some of the world’s best PLCs, and Gibotech naturally has dedicated service technicians who specialize in Siemens PLCs.

PLC control

A central PLC control system includes communication, for example, between

  • one or more robots,
  • one or more servo axes,
  • external equipment, such as injection molding machines, CNC machines, etc.,
  • user interface, such as an HMI, buttons for starting, stopping, and resetting the system,
  • light tower,
  • safety equipment, such as doors, sensors, scanners, radar, and/or light curtains,
  • process equipment upstream and/or downstream.
