Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen is getting the world’s first intelligent sterilization center, which automatically sterilizes the hospital’s instruments and surgical equipment.

The robots in the smart sterilization centers will set entirely new standards for how surgical instruments are handled in the future. With these new smart robots, all a surgeon needs to do is place an order on their computer, and within minutes the robot will have packed the items, which will then be ready when the surgeon performs surgery the next morning.
The building will be the first of two new central sterilization units in the Capital Region, located at Rigshospitalet and Herlev Hospital, respectively. Rigshospitalet has invested 956 million Danish kroner in the new facility, which will supply sterilized surgical instruments to a total of nine hospitals. The new central sterilization facility at Rigshospitalet will sterilize surgical equipment for Rigshospitalet, Gentofte, Bispebjerg, and Frederiksberg Hospital. And the upcoming facility at Herlev will provide sterile instruments for Herlev, North Zealand, Glostrup, and Hvidovre/Amager Hospital.
