The 3D scanning helps to provide an overview of how the various automation solutions can work together in the Central Sterile Supply Department.

Have you ever seen a Central Sterile Supply Department in a hospital? The department where they wash, examine and sterilize all used surgical equipment – and store it until it needs to be used again.

Unless you actually work in a CSSD, you are unlikely to have seen such a department from the inside.

But now you can. Gibotech has made a 3D scanning of the Central Sterile Supply Department at the Universitätsklinikum Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Kiel.

See all the automation options

On the 3D scanning, you can see the different areas in a Central Sterile Supply Department: the unclean, the clean and the sterile.

In the clean and sterile area, Gibotech has installed various automation solutions that help healthcare personnel during their workday.

There are, for example, work tables that are automatically adjusted to fit the individual employee. Buffers with robots that place and pick up equipment when employees place an order in the system – and the buffer’s IT system keeps track of which equipment is on which shelves.

There are AGVs that transport equipment between the various workstations, e.g. from the washing machine to the work table, where an employee checks the instruments to ensure that they are still working optimally.

And the big, yellow robot in the corner has the task of stacking wire baskets with instruments after weight and size before they are sent further into the autoclave to be sterilized, and then further into the sterile buffer.

Each point can be expanded with more information about the individual solution.

Semi or fully automated

When you choose automation solutions for a CSSD – or any other department – you can choose to go with the full package or just some individual solutions that suit your needs.

The adjustable work tables will in themselves provide better working conditions for the healthcare personnel because the height and the light can be adjusted. And the AGVs alone will still save employees from spending time transporting equipment from one place to another.

Whatever you choose, the implementation of an automation solution will relieve employees and lead to a more efficient workflow, because the same task is performed continuously by the automation solution; it does not leave in favour of another task or take a lunch break.

The 3D scan was made in collaboration with EUC Lillebælt.
